Jesus de la Vega Picture

Sculptor

With 11 years he made his first exhibition of sculptures with no less than 75 works in different materials. His first works were made in clay and clay, and later in cast bronze. His first important work was a 30 cm sculpture of an old man.

Among his first works exhibited is that of Mero the sweeper, a figure known to all in Torrelavega in the 70s, today we can see it when we walk through the gardens of Pequeñeces, it is a realistic and small size that reflects the physical defects of the Street sweeper.
He began his studies of fine arts in Madrid at the San Fernando Academy but his concern and desire to work led him to learn techniques in a foundry workshop and to leave the academy.
His works begin to be sold to individuals and public institutions from a very young age, which today adorn squares, roundabouts, avenues, gardens, and public buildings.
His creative concern took him to Los Angeles in the United States for a year (1991), the lack of means available there solved it using the supermarket cartons as material, at this stage he remembers with special affection the sculpture of A gigantic red telephone built from water packaging. When he was making a dent in the artistic environment in the city of cinema, his nostalgia for Cantabria brought him back and today he has his workshop at his house in Puente Avíos.
His work is listed as expressionist and constructivist and with great realism at the same time. Expressionism tries to give more intensity of expression to the sculptures, with exaggerated gestures it achieves a great emotional force. Constructivism is characterized by being interested in the forms of architecture, organization of plans and the expression of volume.
In his sculptures he forgets the classic Greek canon of the seven heads and chooses the super hero canon (eight heads) with what his characters are like supermen similar to those of the comics, strong, hard and with an open interior in sight. They are not the figures of perfect dimensions but almost human beings of great strength and size.
